Marc Aldine, a pseudonym of Antoine Bouvard Senior, is probably one of the most popular and prolific painters of Venetian scenes of the early 20th century.

From the late 19th century travel abroad to visit the sights of Europe was gaining popularity, particularly among the English and French gentry.

High on the list of destinations was Venice.

Paintings of the city became highly desirably and although Antoine Bouvard Senior was based primarily in Paris, he identified this market and spent much of his time during the 1920s and 30s working in Venice and selling his paintings through dealers in London and Paris.
