Carlton Alfred Smith was a genre painter and watercolourist. He frequently painted cottage interiors that conveyed a romantic image of domestic life at the end of the 19th Century.

Carlton Alfred Smith created a quality of light synonymous with strong sunshine. The quality of Smith’s fine images and his desirable selection of subjects have made him extremely popular with both collectors and publishers worldwide.

Carlton Alfred Smith exhibited mostly at Suffolk Street (one hundred and fifty-eight works), but also at The New Watercolour Society and the Royal Academy from 1879, as well as in the provinces.
