Edward Benjamin Herberte
was from Warwickshire. He painted manyb paintings of the North Warwickshire Hunt and some are actually inscribed Kenilworth.
He was one of the first artists to depict the ‘hard riding’ ladies. Until the 1830’s when the ‘leapng head’, the third pommel on the side saddle, was introduced, ladies ddi not have a firm enough seat to ride ‘hard’ across country. He oftens showed these top hatted Amazons in their flowing skirts leaping fences while not infrequently a man is crashing to the ground. Herberte however, was far too mch of a gentleman ever to show a lady falling!
Herbertes hunting paintings depict quality horses with presence.
