Montague Dawson
was a very keen yachtsman, and so was his grandfather Henry Dawson (1811-1878). Much of his childhood was spent on Southampton Water.
Around 1910,
Montague Dawson
decided to work at a commercial art studio in London, but when the First World War broke out he joined the Royal Navy. Charles Napier Hemy (1841-1917), a fellow fighter he met in Falmouth, considerably influenced Dawson's work.
Montague Dawson
established himself as a professional marine artist after the war. He died in 1973 in Midhurst, England
